SEM, PPC, Search Engine Marketing, Pay Per Click, is all the same thing.
Pay Per Click or PPC is what most people understand so let’s go with that.
PPC marketing used to be very simple. Google would let you buy clicks for a certain price and you could send people anywhere. Monitor your sales to money spent and if you’re turning a profit, buy more clicks!
These days there’s a lot more involved, Google has regulated the process worse than Obama has health insurance. It’s a fine science of finessing your ads with your web properties or landing pages for those particular ads. Lots of variables like Goggle’s rank of your ad/landing page (quality score) go into determining what you wind up paying for ads and what type of visibility you get with Google these days.
So in my recommendation, Play with Google Adwords and Facebook ads if you are into it and you have plenty of spare time. Otherwise you’re better of having someone that knows what they are doing run your campaign.
With the importance of quality score and page rank, PPC has become closely related to SEO, so make sure you practicing good SEO ( Search Engine Optimization ) strategies!
